In light of the 5 year anniversary of the landmark Yazzie/Martinez v. State of New Mexico ruling, the 2023 7th Annual Institute for American Indian Education (IAIE) Summit will focus on changes that have occurred to provide a sufficient education to Native American students, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, English learners, and children with disabilities. The summit will recap what happened, what is currently happening, and what lies in the future of the case.

Confirmed speakers include:

Wilhelmina Yazzie: Original Yazzie plaintiff in the lawsuit.

Melissa Candelaria, Alisa Diehl, and Preston Sanchez: Attorneys who represent the Yazzie plaintiffs in the case and continue to litigate today.

NM Representative Derrick Lente and Regis Pecos: Legislative leaders pushing for full integration of Yazzie/Martinez directives through a variety of policy making processes and advocacy.

Attendees will have the opportunity to provide input, discuss the future of Yazzie/Martinez, and collectively add to the growing body of discourse that guides the education of our students, which includes higher education, amongst an audience of tribal leaders, tribal education directors, higher education administrators, K-12 administrators and educators, students, parents, and other stakeholders.

The summit will be held in-person at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center on Wednesday, June 7th from 9AM to 2PM.
