The Institute for American Indian Education is hosting a virtual summit on June 4th, 2021 from 9 A.M to 1:00 P.M. (MT). The virtual summit will be presented in two parts. Part I will provide a brief overview and a panel discussion and Part II will provide an opportunity for further discussions among all attendees.

Looking to 2022: Finding strategies that work

Since Judge Sarah Singleton’s ruling on Yazzie/Martinez v. State of New Mexico in 2018, legislation has been introduced to implement educational remedies. However, numerous significant bills to carry out these remedies in 2019, 2020, and 2021 have not reached the Governor’s desk for signature. Is our strategy working? This summit will re-examine and refine a framework of legislative strategies to serve our children of New Mexico that maximize our advocacy, resources, and educational capacity.

PART I

Faculty members from IAIE will provide an introduction and presentation on an analysis of legislation. An invited panel of educators, administrators, and legislators will have the opportunity to engage in commentaries and remarks on the presentation by IAIE.

PART II

After the panel, all participants will have an opportunity to further discuss and engage on the analysis through breakout sessions. Each breakout room will be facilitated by an IAIE faculty. Is our strategy working? This summit's focus is to re-examine and refine a framework of legislative strategies to serve our children of New Mexico that maximize our advocacy, resources, and educational capacity.
